Ego

This CHOOSEDAY is all about Ego! I find the ego to be a funny old thing. It can make us feel superior one day and inferior the next. The dictionary tells us that the ego is “a person’s sense of self esteem or self importance”. We all have an ego, and we do need to have one, as without it, we would have no belief in our ability to do anything…

But what happens when the ego starts to take over? We become self-centred, and focussed on an insular world rather than looking at a bigger picture. We start to give the impression that we are better than everyone around us. If people challenge us we become angry, negative and unable to accept that there may be a different reality to the one that we think we are living. We have a constant need for external validation and want people to feed our ego, so that we “know” we are in the right. We portray a certain arrogance and aggressiveness. Sometimes, we don’t even see what is happening as the ego can be a sneaky little so-and-so! But before long, things stop flowing. Friends and colleagues begin drifting away. We get a feeling of unease and wondering why things are starting to go array. So we get more angry and this start the not so merry-go-round of stagnation.

So what can we do to keep our egos in check and stop this happening? Listen! Listen to friends. Listen to the universe. Notice the signs. Keep yourself grounded. Practice honest self-reflection. Consider the feelings of others before you act and speak. Stay humble. Give your ego a job to do. For example, change the focus from self-preservation to serving a purpose. And the hardest one of all, let go of things that you can’t control! 🐉💚
