At the Height of the Light

At the Height of the Light

As the Summer Solstice approaches, I find myself reflecting not on what I want to achieve, but on what has already grown.

There is something special about this point in the wheel of the year. The Earth is abundant and alive. The hedgerows are bursting with life, the days are long, and the sun lingers in the sky long into the evening. Even if it isn’t very warm this year! Everywhere we look, nature is expressing herself in her fullest form.

In the Celtic Wheel of the Year, the Summer Solstice marks the turning towards the South and the welcoming of the element of Fire. Fire represents passion, creativity, courage and transformation. It is the spark that inspires us to take action, to follow our hearts and to step into our lives more fully. Yet Fire is not only about movement and change. It is also about illumination. It shines a light on what has already been created, nurtured and brought into being.

As the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, we are invited to pause and notice what is already flourishing within our own lives. Before we focus on what comes next, perhaps there is value in acknowledging how far we have already travelled.

So often we move through life looking ahead. We focus on the next goal, the next challenge, the next thing we believe we should be doing. We rarely stop to celebrate the growth that has already taken place. Yet nature teaches us a different way. The oak tree does not spend its time wishing it were taller. The wildflowers do not compare themselves to the blossoms growing beside them. Everything unfolds in its own time and according to its own nature.

As I reflect on my own year so far, I can see how much has changed, often without me even noticing it. Some changes have been visible. Deepening my Reiki and drum practice and combining the two. Beginning my Bardic journey. Creating Return to Earth. Others have been quieter and perhaps more significant. Spending more time in sacred places. Listening more deeply to the land. Trusting my own path. Feeling more at home in myself than I once did.

None of these things arrived because I chased them. They unfolded naturally when I followed what felt true. Looking back, I can see that the moments which have brought the greatest sense of fulfilment have not been those driven by striving or achievement. They have been the moments of connection. Connection to nature. Connection to community. Connection to ancient wisdom. Connection to something deeper than the noise and business of everyday life.

I have found myself returning again and again to sacred places this year. Places where time feels different. Places where the land itself seems to hold stories, memories and wisdom. Places that remind me that we are part of something much greater than ourselves.

Whenever I spend time in these places, I am reminded that nature never rushes. The seasons arrive exactly when they are meant to. The trees grow at their own pace. The rivers find their way without force. There is a quiet trust woven into the natural world that I think many of us have forgotten.

Perhaps that is one of the gifts of the Summer Solstice. At the height of the light, we are invited to step out of doing and into noticing. To acknowledge the seeds which we planted months ago that are now beginning to bloom. To honour the lessons we have learned, the challenges we have overcome and the ways in which we have grown, even when that growth has been almost invisible.

As the wheel turns to the South and the fires of the Solstice burn brightly, perhaps the invitation is not to ask what more we need to do, but to notice what is already alive within us.

What dreams are beginning to take shape?

What parts of yourself have you rediscovered?

What brings you joy?

What lights the fire within your soul?

At the height of the light, before the days slowly begin their journey back towards darkness, there is wisdom in pausing to honour the path you have already walked.

Not because the journey is complete, but because every flame deserves to be acknowledged before it lights the way forward.

May this Solstice bring you warmth, inspiration and a deeper connection to the fire that burns within.

Happy Summer Solstice.
