This CHOOSEDAY, is all about the Goddess Brigid. While we are aware of her association with the festival of Imbolc, what do we actually know about her?
Brigid is an Ascended Master, Goddess, Saint, and a highly regarded Celtic Deity. A triple goddess, she represents a multifaceted essence of fire, healing, and fertility, embodying the harmonious balance of masculine and feminine energies. Often seen as a patron of creativity, abundance, and inner transformation, she is also recognised as a warrior, frequently compared to Archangel Michael, and some say she is in fact the female equivalent to him. Additionally, she is linked to the element of water, with numerous sacred wells and rivers bearing her name. Brigid is the daughter of Dagda (meaning "great god"), the leader of the Tuatha dē Danann in Irish mythology, and the half-sister of Aengus, the Celtic Love God.
Goddess Brigid is primarily invoked as a powerful Celtic deity of healing, fire, and poetry, serving as a guardian of inspiration, transformation, and protection. Particularly revered during Imbolc, she is called upon for protection, fertility, and to usher in light and renewal after winter, especially regarding health and artistic endeavours. As the goddess associated with sacred wells and springs, she is invoked for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Honoured as a protector of homes, families, and livestock, she is often invoked for safety, traditionally by hanging rushes or cloths in her honor. Also known as the "Lady of Inspiration," she is the patroness of poets, artists, and musicians, igniting the fire of creativity. Brigid inspires the "fire of the forge," aiding in personal transformation, change, and skill mastery. In Irish tradition, she is also recognised for her role in "keening," symbolising comfort in times of grief.
To connect with Brigid, you might light candles, especially those in white or made of beeswax, and care for a hearth. Offering prayers for inspiration, healing, or protection can also help, as can celebrating the festival of Imbolc. Her associated colours are white, yellow, blue, and green. Some herbs and plants linked to her include rosemary, heather, bay, thyme, snowdrop, and dandelion. Crystals connected to her energy are carnelian, amethyst, jasper, and fire agate. You can also find simple invocation prayers on the internet if you wish!
