What is Afterdrop?

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

After my top ten tips for dipping in the colder months last week, I had a lot of messages asking me about afterdrop so here goes!!

Afterdrop is a conductive phenomenon where your core continues to cool during the initial stages of rewarming. Our core temperature can continue to drop even when we are in a warm and dry environment. We can lose up to 4.5 degrees which increases the risk of shivering, fainting, and of course hypothermia. In severe cases, afterdrop can even lead to collapse.

They symptoms are feeling extra cold, shivering, sometimes uncontrollably, feeling faint and nauseous. You may even pass out entirely!

So what can we do about it I hear you ask!

1. When you get out the water, take off wet clothes as soon as possible

2. Get dressed quickly. Baggy layers are the best as they will trap air and help keep the heat in!

3. DO NOT take a hot shower or bath as this will lead to increased symptoms and make them worse!

4. Drink something warm and have something to eat. Personally I like cake but it’s up to you!!

5. Move your body. Wim Hoff has some good post dip exercises on YouTube!

6. Don’t attempt to drive until your core temperature has recovered.

7. Breathe!!

How long does it last? Our core temperature can continue to drop for about 30-45 minutes after we exit the water before it starts to rise again. The colder you get, the longer it takes!

This is just a brief overview of afterdrop and there are many articles online if you wish to read more!

Safe dipping all!! 🌊🙌🏻🐉💚
