Earth Day

This CHOOSEDAY is International Earth Day! This is a day that promotes harmony with nature and reminds us of the importance of protecting all the different ecosystems and species on our planet. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 in the USA after a decade of local protests about air and water pollution. Twenty years later, in 1990, Earth Day went global. More than 200 million people in 141 countries came together to call for environmental issues to be discussed on the world stage.

Many ecosystems are under attack from climate change and the natural disasters caused by rising temperatures: forest fires, floods and terrible storms. More than a million animal and plant species are in danger of extinction through loss of habitat, mainly due to human activity.

We use the name Mother Earth or our Great Mother because it reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit. And, because, like any mother, she nurtures, provides, and takes care of us, without asking for anything in return… But in return, we must take care of her. She is not a plaything for us to abuse, but a precious resource that we need to protect for our children. We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from future generations.

“We are all part of Mother Earth. She sustains us and we must sustain her in return.”
